Biography of John Lietzau, M.A.
John Lietzau studied Family Systems Therapy at Northwestern University and recently completed Facilitator Training at the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project in Duluth, Minnesota.
For 20 years he has helped individuals and families implement successful non-violent strategies through his private practice, Family Interventions, in 14 states, Canada and England. In addition he has partnered with Illinois churches in the development of a transitional housing program for families in need.
Mr. Lietzau’s Workshop, Fathering Accountability and Commitment Training, is the recipient of a Mission of Service Award as well as a Department of Justice grant which provided training to the Chicago Heights Police Department in nonviolent intervention strategies. He has testified before The Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D. C. and several state capitals.
John has been a keynote speaker, published author and featured in newspaper articles as well as a producer of a weekly radio talk show. His play, Continuous Cut, about the violent separation of a mother and daughter, is registered with the Writer’s Guild of America, as well as a short movie of the same title.
Both John and his wife Beverly are cancer survivors. This fact led John to write a master’s research paper entitled, Advocacy or Dependency: The cancer survivor’s examination of two diverse treatment paradigms. The central thesis of this paper is that upon receiving a cancer diagnosis, the individual has the choice to either respond with (spiritual) self-advocacy, or accept it with stoic resignation. Self-advocacy is a component of the treatment modality used in Mr. Lietzau’s family system’s and domestic abuse intervention treatment philosophy.
